RuneScape

Runescape is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), developed by Jagex Ltd. The game is widely popular among fans of adventure games of all ages. About 10 million people play the game, which makes RuneScape probably the most popular free browser MMORPG, a fact that is reflected in the Guinness Book of Records.

RuneScape is designed as a Java-based applications, and is known for its very low system requirements while offering a full three-dimensional virtual world. Setting and gameplay

The game is set in the fictional kingdom of Gielinor, divided into several regions and cities. Players can move around the map - on foot or using various means of transportation. Each player can choose their own path of development and leveling as well as in many other games of the MMORPG genre.

RuneScape has a non-linear plot. Players may choose the direction of development the prefer, set their own objectives and goals.

A newly created RuneScape character appears in a separated area where the player is offered to take a tutorial to get used to the game and master the basic game controls and skills.

Skills

The role-playing system is based on skills: by developing a particular skill, players increase their level - separate for each skill. There are currently 25 skills available for characters in the game. The skills are: Attack, Strength, Defence, Constitution, Ranged, Magic, Prayer, Runecrafting, Mining, Smithing, Fishing, Cooking, Firemaking, Woodcutting, Crafting, Dungeoneering (these are available for both types of RuneScape accounts); and Agility, Herblore, Thieving, Fletching, Slayer, Farming, Construction, Hunter, Summoning (avalaible only for paid accounts).

When you look at other players, you can see their overall combat level, which is calculated from the levels of strength, attack, defense, health, fire, magic, prayer, and the skill of summoning creatures. The other skills are non-combat, such as fishing, cooking, stealing, making potions, etc.

The higher the skills level, the more opportunities are available to the player. The total level of all skills determines the place of a particular player in the game's table of records (High Scores).
The maximum level of a skill is 99 (except Dungeoneering, which has two milestones - levels 99 and 120). Upon reaching this level the player gets the right to wear a special cloak (which can be bought in the paid version of the game, though), and perform a special emotion that emphasizes the mastery of certain skills.

Combat

Combats in RuneScape are real time. They are an important component of the gameplay, at least because various items and money fall off the killed monsters (NPCs) which is a good way to make in game money - RS Gold. Also, players have to fight during quests. Combat level shows just how powerful a player or NPC is in combat. To engage into combat it's necessary to right-click on an opponent and choose the "Attack" option. The RuneScape character will automatically fight until the opponent dies, flees or teleports.

Most of the weapons in the game resemble those in the Middle Ages, though there are also some fantasy ones. Each weapon has its advantages and disadvantages. Also, players can summon monsters to help them in battles.

There are 3 types of attack: melee, magic and ranged. Melee combat is a very close range with or without weapons; magic attacks require rune stones to create spells; ranged attacks use respective weapons, bows and arrows for example. These types of combat to create a "Combat Triangle". Melee is effective against fire, ranged is effective against magic, and magic attacks are effective against melee respectively. The Combat Triangle applies equally to player characters and their characteristics and NPCs.

Classes in RuneScape

Unlike most other MMORPGs, RuneScape does not really has a classes system.

Probably the above-mentioned combat styles are a more evident distinction in the game, and those are not limited to certain classes or character types, either. When creating a RuneScape character you are offered to choose a fairly large number of appearances that are named after classes names. However, they only determine the look of the character but not the abilities. You may choose any skills to train in, and any combat style to use. Moreover, you even may take inventory for every combat style during the exploration of the RuneScape world, and change your style and used items during combat if the need arises. In short, you are not limited in this regard.

Quests

Quests in RuneScape are a series of assignments, tasks following a plot. Typically, to be completed quests require certain levels of skills, combat levels, quest points, or other prevously completed quests. There are solo quests, and group quests.
Many quests require killing a powerful enemy.
Once a player have completed all the quests, he or she will be able to buy a "cloak of achievements", which is called the Quest Cape (it can be bought from NPCs). A new quest appears every month.

Players receive various rewards for completing quests. The reward depends on the complexity of the quest, and includes money, unique items, access to new areas, more skill points, and, of course, quest points.

PvP in RuneScape

Players can fight against each other in special mini-games. In Bounty Hunter it possible to pick up the things of the vanquished opponent, in Duel Arena bets are possible. There are also other types of PvP - Fist of Guthix, Castle Wars, etc., where the completion of tasks, including killing the opponents, players can buy special things for points, which are granted in case of victory.
