Character death in RuneScape
16 January, 2012
Most people wonder what happens after an in game characters dies. Basically, characters in RuneScape are immortal. However, every character has a certain amount of Health Points, and as there is combat and inflicting damage in the game, there should be a logical end for such actions - the death of the character. And there is.
So, a player's character dies when the Health Points he or she has reach 0 points. There appears a related message on the screen that informs in text about this in most cases unpleasant event along with a gravestone at the spot the death occured.
Then the character respawns, in other words resurrects to be able to continue his or her advernture through the world of RuneScape. There is a list of locations the character may choose from to resurrect in; upon resurrection the life points and the stats are restored to their maximum available value.
There are drawbacks of dying, though. First of all, death sends the character back to a respawn point which means there is need to travel back to the location of interest. And the location may really be a distant one with no faster ways of transportation available for it. Which in short means loss of time.
And secondly, upon death the character looses the items he or she had. Basically, it's possible to save 3 items after death, the rest of the items will be placed under the gravestone for the period of time gravestones remain present at the spot of death. If the character manages to get to the spot he died, he may reclaim the items. Otherwise the items will be visible for 1 minute to other players present in the area, and they will be able to loot the drop.
(There are also some types of items that cannot be lost, e.g. common low-cost items, RS Gold coins, quest items).
